Why California Drivers Ed Will Never be the Same Again

January 28th, 2008 ·

California now allows parents to allow their kids to take the California driver education course online. This is a great benefit to both the teen and their parents for many reasons. No longer do parents have to leave work or take time out of their busy schedules to transfer their kid to and from driver education class. The teen can now sit at home and take the course over the Internet. In addition, for those kids who live in remote areas, taking this course online is a groovy alternative to driving miles to get to a class.

The law states that teens must be at least fifteen and a half to receive their learner’s permit. A good thing to do is enroll into a state approved California driver education course when you first turn fifteen. This way you are ready to drive when you do obtain your permit. You must keep this permit for six months and have completed fifty hours of behind the wheel training, in addition to completing the online course to fully finish the driver education program. Once the fifty hours are completed, you must then spend at least six hours behind the wheel with a state approved instructor.

The major advantage of taking driver education online is that it allows students to work at their own pace. This completely eliminates any added pressure that maybe added when in a classroom environment. This also allows teens to fully understand the course’s curriculum instead of being rushed along. Working at home enables parents to interact with their kids as they complete the multimedia format training which uses text, audio, graphics, and video to enforce learning objectives. Basically, a parent can be involved in the entire process of their child learning how to drive in a safe and normal manner.

Vacuum wars

January 2nd, 2008 ·

When the wife leaves a catalogue on your computer keyboard I think thats about as much as a hint anyone needs. Unfortunately this catalogue had more to do with housework than any other possible subject.

We have been having the great debate about housework and who does what in the household. Dishes, cat litter, laundry (not folding) and garbage patrol apparently are not enough for one man duties. I’ve been nicely asked to add floor maintenance to the weekly chore list. But I’ll be able to purchase a vacuum to help me out.

Well at least I’m looking at the whole process as adding another gadget. Things have changed since I had to push around that antique vacuum for mom. Now all the vacuum companies have cool products with some great features. Some of the add on vacuum parts seem to make it possible to clean up any mess that the house can throw at me.

Print more for less

January 2nd, 2008 ·

You might have been lucky enough to get a brand new computer set up for the holidays. If you got the full package of cpu, monitor and printer you might now be hitting the high margin follow up sales area.

No its not all those games where computer stores make their money. Its on printer toner and supplies. After working at an undisclosed Apple dealer I’ll tell you that the shops make a killing on printer supplies. And do not expect them to lower the price for your MICR toner because all stores do the same thing.

Promotional gifts for Christmas!

December 18th, 2007 ·

Christmas is in the air! You are busy making arrangements for the upcoming corporate party. Of course you are worried as you don’t want anything to go wrong so are completely into the preparation process. This is the time when you have to make a lot of decisions (those that go beyond your usual managerial spectrum): what venue to choose, what music band to invite, and of course what promotional products to use as gifts for your employees.

Tricks New Corporate Identity

December 17th, 2007 ·

Desiring a new corporate identity is much easier than actually creating one. That is especially true for small businesses. But guess what - when an unknown business name is seen alongside a well-established logo on a logo mug the tides change.

Designers far and wide

December 16th, 2007 ·

A few weeks ago I mentioned my efforts to help set up a local business online. I was acting more as an assistant and not the actual person sitting down and coding up the page. Its important that someone helps explain all the parts of setting up an online business; webhosting, e-commerce, design, software etc.

When you actually get around to doing the Web design work you are not limited by your location. While it would be great to talk to someone face to face you are limiting yourself if you only look for local designers.

Research means being noisy

December 15th, 2007 ·

My quest for the new home computer has lead me to be slightly more noisy around other computer users. I figure that once I see what everyone else is using it will help me in my decision.

One thing to consider is that some people might only be working in Word and surfing the net. Very light users, very light computer needs.

I noticed that one of my friends was using a computer to run his construction business. He’s using a specific piece of Construction Software to plan out all the details of his jobs. What this really showed me was that his computer needs were meet more by this one piece of software than by buying a big machine.

Faster computer search

December 15th, 2007 ·

With the holidays approaching its also time to look for a big household gift for the family. One item that keeps being discussed is a new household computer. The old Mac G4 computer is likely entering its last stages of operation.

The obvious choice for any Mac computer fan would be one of the new iMac computers. But now with all the different software that is available really the quest has shifted to finding the fastest computer available. I have started to research what make some machines faster than other and I’m learning all about different computer processors and other factors.

Obviously the processor makes a huge difference. Dual core computers seem to be the norm now. I have seen machines feature Embedded Computer chips that help with certain high end graphic programs.

Time saver not likely

December 14th, 2007 ·

One of the dangers of being online is the whole information overload problem. You can find way to much news and information from all the different news websites. If you tried to read all the different tech news sources you’d never get away from the computer.

Another guaranteed time killer thanks to the internet are online games. You can find tons of Free Online Games on the internet. One thing that the sites feature are remakes of classic arcade games that are guaranteed to appeal to the older folks who are online. Many a lunch hour at a corporate workplace has been spent playing PacMan online.

Baseball has been very, very dirty to us fans

December 13th, 2007 ·

Wow just check out some of the names mentioned in Monsieur Mitchell’s report. Plus just think that he did not even get everyone who has been helping themselves over the years. The players union of course did not help out the process.

But the players union was not helping the clean players by avoiding the subject. What about the clean guys who hit 15-25 homers per season when those other guys were all jacked up? Somebody should be looking out for them because their union was not.

Mortgage magic online

December 13th, 2007 ·

If you own a home you’ve likely seen those ads on websites. You likely can guess what ads I’m talking about already. Its those very attractive looking mortgage loan rate ads. They mention some crazy numbers like $399 for 150K or something similar.

I know rates are low but man those ads are killing me. The people who work in the mortgage marketing field know how to generate some traffic with those super attractive rates in those headlines.

They all know that everyone is looking to generate so extra cash flow and saving a few hundred dollars every month is pretty attractive.

Baseball off season problem

December 12th, 2007 ·

I was reading another magazine article about the sorry state of baseball which is actually all about Barry Bonds. Here you have the MLB home run king in big trouble. Bonds should be enjoying this post season but instead he’s likely spending all his days talking to lawyers.

The root cause of all his problems were his choices. Bonds wanted a boost in his performance. He took the wrong path by not understanding what he was doing by choosing some products.

Almost all pros take some type of supplements. The problem is they need to take the right ones. If Bonds had selected the right prohormones supplement he likely would not be in this much trouble right now. Instead of some designer product Bonds could have taken something that he would not have had to hide from everyone.

Kitchen view

December 11th, 2007 ·

Last night I had one of those extra fancy special types of restaurant meals. No it was not all fine china and table service.

It was the exact opposite which makes it even more interesting. Some restaurants now allow you to seat in the back in the kitchen and watch all the magic happen.

Well this was one of those meals but with a twist. Right before we arrived the kitchen had a major problem with one its walk-in fridges. It died right around the start of the dinner rush. The thing is we’re not talking about some 6ft cubic fridge. This was an industrial refrigeration at its finest. The walk-in was about 20 feet long and there was a massive amount of food and some of it was pretty expensive.

Boston trip to not remember

December 4th, 2007 ·

One day trips out of town for business should be pretty painless except for the travel. Sure you stress about getting to the airport and back but thats about it. Right? Well in most cases thats the major concern.

But what happens when your trip down to Boston gets ruined by some stupid cell phone talking, Blackberry messaging, car driver? Well its time to start searching for a Boston car accident lawyer because someone has to pay for my missed flight back home, my new bad back and way to much stress.

Some older age help

December 3rd, 2007 ·

One of the most difficult things that I’ve recently seen in my neighbourhood are some seniors moving out of their homes. One couple had lived in their home for over 49 years but they had to move I think mostly due to financial concerns.

If they could have afforded some at home care they likely could have stayed in their house. Since they are not in the greatest of health they could have looked at some sort of life settlements on their existing life insurance policies.

University gifts but watch that name

November 29th, 2007 ·

If you are looking for some Christmas gifts for some university/college aged folks it can be pretty difficult. They likely already own all the latest high tech toys and if they do not, well it’s likely because they are out of most people’s price range.

So besides buying the latest Apple iPod version you can check and see if they would want some Greek clothing. If you’re wondering if that’s clothing from the island of Greece you better do some more research into your college aged friends university lifestyle.

Christmas displays means showtime

November 26th, 2007 ·

The big countdown is on in the household. In the USA once that Thanksgiving turkey is finally moved off the table the Christmas season kicks into full swing. Up in Canada its the post Grey Cup action that means Xmas is rapidly approaching.

Christmas displays are almost a competitive sport in the neighbourhood. The outside displays have been getting better every year. We have expanded beyond the usual light shows to include some smaller sets and displays on the lawn. One very nice item that I have decided to add to our Christmas display is a christopher radko ornament. These decorations are top of the line and they add a very nice touch of class to any Christmas display.

Recruitment help in the computer

November 23rd, 2007 ·

When you are starting out with any decent size business hiring the right employees can make the difference. It does not matter if you have the only toasters in town and everyone has tons of sliced bread without the right employees no one is going to be buying your toasters.

Besides the all important interview you can get some help in your employee search by using some recruiting software to help set up a good system. You should just assume that your company is going to be growing in the future so having the right employee software set up from day one is going to pay dividends down the road.

Check that IP address

November 21st, 2007 ·

Another consideration when you are looking for webhosting involves IP addresses. Some hosting companies offer you a super cheap price when you sign up for their shared hosting account. You have to wonder how many different sites are hosted on the same IP address if the price is so low.

One way around this problem is the use of a dedicated IP address. This feature is also important if you are using a SSL certificate on your ecommerce site. The folks over at ix web hosting seem to understand this issue since they include this feature in their business accounts at no additional cost. Some companies charge you an additional $2 per month for a dedicated IP address.

Business start up needs cards

November 21st, 2007 ·

Even if you are setting up an online focused business you still need to play by the regular business game rules. You can’t avoid all the costs that a regular business faces.

One item that should be first on your list is production of business cards. Once you start meeting people and explaining what you are doing one of the first things that people will ask for is a business card. Its so much easier and much more professional to have a business card to hand out with your websites address than scambling around for a piece of paper to write down your url. Plus all your family and friends will start asking you for one and it’ll help show them that you are taking the project seriously.
